Charlwood Street is located in the village like part of Pimlico and is well situated near an abundance of shops, bars, and restaurants on Wilton Road, Warwick Way, and Churton Street. A more extensive shopping and dining experience can be found at the newly regenerated Nova development surrounding Victoria Station and Victoria Street, both of which are only a short walk away. Transport links are excellent, with various bus routes on nearby Belgrave Road and Vauxhall Bridge Road, as well as tube lines from Pimlico Underground Station and Victoria Underground and Mainline Station.
The terrace houses on Charlwood Street were built from 1845 onwards and designed by Thomas Cubitt, the prolific Victorian master builder responsible for creating Pimlico, most of Belgravia, and the east front of Buckingham Palace. As with much of Cubitt's work, the original Charlwood Street houses are built in the classical style out of brick, overlaid with the stucco rendering that is so recognisable.
The name Charlwood is taken from property in Surrey owned by Henry Wise, the royal gardener, first to Queen Anne and later to King George I. Wise was famous for creating an English version of the formal Baroque gardens associated with the Catholic courts of mainland Europe, from which he drew inspiration. He was responsible for the creation of the formal gardens at great houses such as Hampton Court, Longleat, Chatsworth, Burley, and, perhaps most famously, for the gardens at Blenheim Palace, which date from 1705.
Charlwood Street is also known as the street of a hundred smiling faces,' a moniker earned because of the rather wonderful reliefs of curious, sometimes rather grotesque faces, lions' heads, and other eccentricities that can be found smiling out between many of the ground floor windows. This embellishment was added to the original Cubitt design by builders Charles Aldin and Henry Harris when construction began in late 1845.
